OF THE 50‑STATES, HAWAII CAME OUT AT THE TOP OF THAT LIST.
MOTORISTS HERE RANKED FIRST IN CHANGING LANES OR TURNING WITHOUT SIGNALING, SPEEDING 20 MILES PER HOUR OR MORE OVER THE LIMIT AND RUNNING RED LIGHTS.
HAWAII DRIVERS ALSO RANKED HIGHLY IN THE DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND TEXTING WHILE DRIVING CATEGORIES.
KEEP IN MIND THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 5,000 SURVEY PARTICIPANTS, 100 FROM EACH STATE.

VERY SELF‑REFLECTING GOING TO BE HONEST.

WE'RE IN THE TRENDS OF ABOUT 70 CRASHES EVERY DAY ON OUR ROADWAYS.
THAT'S STILL A HIGH NUMBER.
BUT I STILL DON'T FEEL LIKE IF YOU'RE COMPARING TO THE REST OF THE NATION, THAT YOU WOULD PUT US WORST BY ANY MEANS.

WHEN YOU COMPARE TO L.A. AND NEW YORK AND BOSTON YOU COULD WE RANK THER WORST?
HOW DO YOU FEEL?
>> THINK IT'S WRONG FROM MY SIDE.
>> START LOOKING AT THE DATA WE HAVE ON FATALITIES, MAJOR CRASHES IN THE SYSTEM, WE GENERALLY RANK TOP TEN TO TOP 15 IN THE NATION OF SAFEST ROADS.
STARTED LOOKING AT THE SURVEY, I AGREE WITH SLATE, WE HAVE THE MOST HONEST PARTICIPANTS VERSUS WORST DRIVERS.
WHAT I WOULD SAY IS I MEAN, 2006, 160 FATALITIES ON OUR SYSTEM.
OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, HAD LESS THAN 100 AND 102 LAST YEAR.
THAT'S STILL KEEPS US IN TOP TEN IN OUR NATION.
THAT BEING SAID, WE STILL HAD 102 FATALITIES ON THE SYSTEMS.
WE CAN DO WAY BETTER.

HAVE TO AGREE WITH THE GENTLEMEN, FORTHCOMING HONESTY COMES TO HAWAII.
SURVEY CAN BE SKEWED ANY WAY THAT YOU WANT IT.
100 PEOPLE THAT IS VERY SMALL, SO SMALL SCALE, BUT LOOK AT IT, AS TO WHAT'S GOING ON, IT DOESN'T NEGATE THE FACT THAT MADD IS STILL OUT THERE DOING THEIR PART, AND HELPING FAMILIES AND PROMOTING AWARENESS.

WHAT KINDS OF THOSE BAD DRIVING HABITS DO YOU TEND TO SEE MOST OFTEN ON OUR ROADS?
>> LOOK AT THE FATAL AND CRITICAL CRASHES, I THINK TOP THREE ARE THE BIGGEST FACTORS THAT WE SEE ARE IMPAIRMENT, SPEED AND DISTRACTION.
OUTSIDE OF THAT, WE ALSO HAVE A LOT OF RED LIGHT RUNNING, DO HAVE SOME OF THAT.

LAST 2 YEARS, OFFICERS IN THE FIELD HAVE ISSUED APPROXIMATELY ON OAHU, ISSUED ABOUT 4,000 RED LIGHT CITATIONS.
THAT RED LIGHT CAMERA SYSTEM IS ISSUED 40,000.
SO KUDOS TO TOD FOR PULLING THAT OFF.
BUT AS FAR AS HABITS I THINK IF I HAD TO NAME ONE THAT I FEEL IS LIKE THE BIGGEST FOR JUST COMMON EVERY DAY CRASHES.
IT WOULD BE DISTRACTED DRIVING.

MANUAL COGNITIVE AND COGNITION.
TAKING HANDS OFF THE WHEEL.

THE NEXT ONE IS GOING TO BE THE VISUAL.
ACTUALLY TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE ROADWAY.

AND HAS THE COURSE CHANGED AS FOR YOU THERE'S SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERNET AND CELL PHONES ARE EVEN MORE EMBEDDED WITH THE YOUNG GENERATIONS.
>> I'VE BEEN WITH DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR 30 YEARS.
AND COME BACK TO DRIVER EDUCATION FOR SIX YEARS.
AND AS FAR AS CHANGES, WHAT CAN I SPEAK ON FROM MYSELF IS DRIVER EDUCATION WHEN I TOOK IT BACK IN THE EARLY 80S.
IT HAS CHANGED, WE COVER CURRENT ISSUES THAT ARE, COME UP, AS WELL AS NOW, IT'S WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH IS THE I GUESS IT'S CALLED INFO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM IN THE CARS.
AND THE BOTTOM LINE IS WHAT WE TEACH AND COVER WITH OUR STUDENTS IS THEY HAVE TO BE FOCUSED ON THE ROAD AND THERE'S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THAT.

SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO HAVE IT RIGHT NEXT TO THEIR MOUTHS WHEN THEY'RE DRIVING.
IF YOU COMPOUND ALL OF THAT WITH DRINKING WHETHER IT BE OF AGE OR UNDER AGE, AS WELL AS DOING THAT, IT'S DEFINITELY A DISTRACTER.
LOOKING AT THE MVC THINGS MAJOR BROUGHT UP, LOSING CONTROL, PEOPLE DROP THEIR PHONES AND YOU SEE IT.

55% DRUNK AND DRUNK DRIVING.
5% EXCESSIVE SPEEDING.
25% DISTRACTION.

IF SOMEBODY CUTS ANOTHER PERSON OFF, TAKE IT PERSONALLY.
IF ONE PERSON STARTS SPEEDING ON THE ROADWAY, SOMEBODY ELSE WANTS TO SHOW HOW FAST THEIR CAR CAN GO.
ALL THINGS EGO STARTS TAKING OVER SAFETY PIECE OF IT.
GOT TO REMEMBER THAT WE'RE ALL DRIVING POTENTIAL WEAPONS.
PEOPLE CAN DIE VERY QUICKLY IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES WHEN WE DRIVE.

>> I'VE SEEN JUST HORRIFIC CRASHES THAT'S VERY SAD KNOWING THAT SOMEBODY LOST THEIR LIFE BECAUSE SOMEBODY ELSE WAS JUST COMPLETELY IRRESPONSIBLE.
AND LIKE HE SAID, A LOT OF IT COMES DOWN TO YOU, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, TO HAVE THAT ATTITUDE OR THAT UNDERSTANDING THAT YOUR DECISIONS HAVE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES.
NOT JUST FOR YOURSELF.
YOU CRASH INTO SOMETHING AND YOU DON'T HURT ANYBODY, OKAY, THAT'S JUST YOU.

FAMILIES STILL HAS TO GO ON AND REMEMBER WHAT THEY'VE GONE THROUGH.

NOT ONLY DOES IT AFFECT THE FAMILIES, IT ALSO AFFECTS THE COMMUNITY IN SOME CASES BECAUSE OF THE CROSSWALKS.
WHATEVER THEY MAY HAVE, THAT'S GOING ON, WE'VE HAD SIMPLE FATALITIES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE HAD DISTRACTED DRIVING.
RESULTED IN LOSS OF LOVED ONE, WHO WAS DOING THE RIGHT THING.
A LOT OF TIMES, IN THE CROSSWALK LEGALLY AND DRIVERS JUST PLOW THROUGH.
TIMING AND THE COGNITIVE RESPONSE, WITH USE OF ALCOHOL, DRIVER OVER .08 SLOWS DOWN YOUR REMOTE OR SKILLS IN A LOT OF CASES.
MADD TRIES TO COMFORT FAMILIES AND ALSO, WE DON'T FORGET.
THAT THEY HAVE TO CONTINUE ON AS WELL.
