Honolulu Boy Choir Haul out the holly Put up the tree before my spirit falls again Fill up the stocking I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now For we need a little Christmas, right this very minute Candles in the window, carols at the spinet Yes, we need a little Christmas, right this very minute It hasn't snowed a single flurry, but Santa's here we're in a hurry So climb down the chimney Turn on the brightest string of lights I've ever seen Slice up the fruit cake It's time we've hung some tinsel on the evergreen bough For I've grown a little leaner, grown a little colder Grown a little sadder, grown a little older And I need a little angel sitting on my shoulder Need a little Christmas now Charlotte Simmons: Children, have you all heard the story the Night Before Christmas?
(Charles: And all through the house?)
Charlotte Simmons: Would you like Charles to tell it to us again?
(Kids: Yeah) Charles Peck All right, if you want me to read to you, come on over here.
Come on all of you.
That's good.
I just happened to have a copy here with me.
Okay, come on, that's it.
All right.
What's happening?
What is this?
(Charlotte: You have to make it look like Santa) Okay, come on, sit down here.
All right.
Here we go.
It's been a long time since I read this, Charlotte.
Charles Peck 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar-plums danced through their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave the lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Dasher!
Now, Dancer!
Now Prancer!
Now Vixen!
On, Comet!
On, Cupid!
On, Donder and Blitzen!
As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled!
His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” Charlotte Simmons: Thank you, Charles, that was nice.
Charles Peck Tell me, Charlotte, do you have any children?
Charlotte Simmons: Of course I do.
Three sons.
Charles Peck Three sons?!
Are they little boys?
Charlotte Simmons: No, well, they're little boys in their hearts, but big little boys now.
Charles Peck Do they believe in Santa Claus?
Charlotte Simmons: Of course they do.
Charles, let me tell you a story.
I remember the day when one of my sons had entered his new world of school, and someone there had told him that there was no Santa Claus.
I saw the blazing light of hope in his dark eyes flicker with doubt as he sought the truth.
He wanted the answer from me.
So I told him that as long as there are children in the world, there will be a Santa Claus, and as surely as love and faith and hope and generosity live in the heart and in the home, there will be a Santa Claus, and he will Come at Christmas time, again and again and again.
No, you will really never see him.
No one ever has.
But no one ever saw love in his mother's heart, right?
And faith in the soul of a child, but these are the part of the wonderment of life.
There's a thin veil covering children and the unseen world, and only the children themselves can push it aside and enter it to see all the magic and beauty and the glory that flows behind.
It's from this wonderful world, the world of make believe that the great realities are born.
The unseen wonders of the world create faith and fancy, love and poetry and romance.
How dreary a world would be for little children if there was no Santa Claus, right?
So I told my son that Santa loves and lives forever to make all the hearts of the little children everywhere glad.
When you are young, you have your own special world, and once you pass through it, of your make believe world, you never come back.
You never return.
Yeah, Charles, my sons believe in Santa Claus.
They still do.
Charles, what is the greatest gift a person can give someone?
Charles Peck Well, I feel that the greatest gift you can give is of yourself.
Now it's great to know to wrap gifts and bring them to people, but somehow at Christmas time, when people are lonely, I think that a visit is much more important.
I think that's the greatest gift you can give.
The gift of yourself.
Honolulu Boy Choir Come, they told me Pa ra pa pa pum A new born King to see Pa ra pa pa pum Our finest gifts we bring Pa ra pa pa pum To lay before the King Pa ra pa pa pum, Ra pa pa pum, Ra pa pa pum So to honour Him Pa ra pa pa pum When we come.

And as the years go by, you find the greatest gifts are the things you cannot buy.

(Charles: If you have any luck at all) Nino J. Martin: Ah, okay.
Well, when I come back on Pau Hana Years, I'll have a full beard.
From all of us on the staff, Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you.
Charlotte Simmons: Charles.
Tell us more about Christmas.
What is it all about?
Charles Peck Well, Christmas is dreams and hopes fulfilled and carols.
It's magic rising up to bless each year, a flashback to the glory which was youth.
Christmas is so many, many things.
It is a star which wise men follow with humble hearts.
We wish you a world of happiness on Christmas Day.
May you have many visitors with friendliness to share, and may God bestow His grace on you and answer your every prayer.

You gave us discipline and a will to work.
You taught us to share and to believe and to respect justice and truth, and you've given us hope and love.
All of these we will pass on to our children and other generations will continue to do so too, all because you took the time to give to us.
We wish you all a happy and merry Christmas.
