ALL OF THEM ATTEND PUBLIC SCHOOLS ON OAHU.

WE'VE BEEN UNDERWAY FOR 10 DAYS OR SO IN SCHOOL.

HOW ARE THINGS GOING WITH YOU AS A STUDENT FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS OF SCHOOL?
HOW HAVE BEEN ENGAGED IN WHAT'S GOING ON IN YOUR SCHOOL?
>> WELL, OBVIOUSLY, IT'S A BIG CHANGE.
CLASSES ARE A LITTLE BIT WEIRD.
IT'S HARD TO BE SOCIAL WITH NEW PEERS.
WHEN I GO TO SCHOOL, VOCAL, BACK TO SCHOOL REALLY FUN BECAUSE WE GET TO KIND OF CHAT WITH EACH OTHER WHILE PAYING ATTENTION TALK ABOUT HOW OUR SUMMER, WHAT'S GOING ON, KEEPING UP WITH OUR LESSONS.
IT'S A LITTLE BIT HARDER BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS ONLINE.
UNMUTE YOUR MIC AND SAY SOMETHING TO YOUR FRIENDS KIND OF DISRUPTS THEM.
ONLY TEN DAYS IN.
BUT GOOD JOB.
DOING A PRETTY GOOD JOB STAYING INVOLVED.

WITH A STRESSED ME OUT MORE WAS THE POSSIBILITY OF GOING FACE TO FACE AND WITH THEIR STARTING OF THEIR SCHOOL DAYS, IT'S STAGGERED.
SO IF MY ELEMENTARY STUDENT IS NEEDING TO LOG IN AT 8:00, AND I'M STILL DROPPING OFF MY MIDDLE SCHOOLER, HOW WOULD I GET THEM ONLINE IF WE'RE STILL COMMUTING IN THE VEHICLE?
THIS WAS THE FIRST WEEK WE REALLY GOT OUR TOES WET INTO CLASSES.
THE TEACHERS HAVE BEEN GREAT.
THEY'RE ENCOURAGING.
THEY'RE REALLY, I THINK, BEEN PAYING ATTENTION TO HOW OUR CHILDREN HAVE BEEN FEELING EMOTIONALLY TOO.
SO I'M REALLY THANKFUL FOR THEM TO PAY ATTENTION.
JUST THE CURRICULUM.
>>Daryl: AFTER SO MANY MONTHS WITHOUT COMMUNICATION, WITHOUT SOCIALIZATION, HOW ARE YOUR KIDS DOING GETTING BACK TO SCHOOL?
ARE THEY EXCITED ABOUT IT?
>> THEY'RE EXCITED.
THEY MISS THEIR FRIENDS.
THE JUST A DIFFERENT, A CHANGE.
I DO FEEL FOR SOME OF THE CHILDREN.
I NOTICE THAT SOME OF MY CHILDREN'S CLASSMATES, HOME ALONE, EVEN AT THE YOUNG ELEMENTARY AGE.
SO I JUST, I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW THEY'RE MANAGING AND HOW THE PARENTS ARE FEELING.
HAVING TO LEAVE THEM TO JUST KIND OF DO THIS ON THEIR OWN.
>>Daryl: THAT IS KIND OF REALLY SAD.
TEACHER ON KAUAI, HOW ARE THINGS GOING FOR YOU AS A TEACHER?
>> THIS YEAR AS BEEN DEFINITELY THE MOST STRESSFUL OF MY CAREER.
A LOT OF MY COLLEAGUES WOULD PROBABLY SAY THE SAME THING.
A LOT OF US JUST HAD TO COMPLETELY CHANGE THE WAY THAT WE'RE DELIVERING INSTRUCTION.
PRETTY MUCH OVERNIGHT.
AND WE HAVE TEACHERS THAT ARE OLDER AND MAYBE NOT AS TECHNOLOGICAL SAVVY AS OTHERS.
SO THE TECHNOLOGY PART HAS BEEN DIFFICULT.
IT'S JUST BEEN REALLY REALLY STRESSFUL.
>>Daryl: COULD YOU BE MORE SPECIFIC ABOUT THE TECHNICAL CAN CHALLENGE FOR A TEACHER?
WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT THIS.
WHAT'S IT LIKE?
WHAT'S YOUR DAY LIKE, TYPICAL DAY?
>> WELL, DEPENDS ON YOUR SCHEDULE.
CERTAIN DAYS WE HAVE WHAT'S CALLED LEARNING WE HAVE LESSONS THAT ARE POSTED INTO OUR GOOGLE CLASSROOM.
STUDENTS ON THEIR OWN WILL GO AND ACCESS THE LESSON AND DO THINGS ON THEIR OWN.
SECOND DAY SHOW UP FOR A CALL LIKE THIS, ALL LOG IN, ON THEIR COMPUTERS, SO IT'S BEEN TOUGH FOR TEACHERS TO HAVE TO LEARN THE TOOLS TO RECORD THEMSELVES AND TO KEEP THE LESSONS ENGAGING AT THE SAME TIME IT'S NOT JUST PUTTING I CAMERA ON YOURSELF AND TALKING TO YOUR STUDENTS.
IT'S MUCH MORE THAN THAT.
BRINGING IN OTHER RESOURCES.
HAVING ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS TO DO.
ALL OF THAT TAKES TIME.
A LOT OF THE THAT REQUIRE AS A LOT OF EFFORT AND A LOT OF LEARNING NEW SKILLS.
IT'S BEEN TOUGH.
>>Daryl: WHAT IS THE CHALLENGES FOR A SCHOOL PRINCIPAL THIS TIME OF DAY?
, THIS TIME OF ERA?
>> A LOT OF IT HAS DO WITH HAVING TO MAKE PLANS AND THEN CHANGE DIRECTION AND PIVOT ON DEPENDING WHAT'S GOING ON OUT THERE AND THE NUMBERS RISING.
I THINK WE WERE VERY READY TO OPEN TO DO IN PERSON TEACHING AND HYBRID TYPE OF MANNER WITH OUR KIDS.
AND THEN THE NUMBERS STARTED SPIKE.
SO IT'S BEEN VERY CHALLENGE.
WE HAVE TO CHANGE PLANS.
BUT YOU KNOW, I'M LUCKY.
SURROUNDED BY VERY GOOD TEACHER AND STAFF.
ABLE TO ADJUST TO THE DIFFERENT CONDITIONS.
WE'RE ABLE TO ADAPT IN THIS GROWING PANDEMIC.
THE KEY WORD I GUESS FOR US IS FLEXIBILITY.
WE TRY OUR BEST TO BE VERY, VERY FLEXIBLE.
IN ADAPTING TO WHATEVER THE CONDITIONS ARE.
>>Daryl: YOU ALSO, AS A PRINCIPAL, HAVE TO DEAL WITH TEACHERS, SOME TEACHERS JUST DON'T WANT TO COME BACK TO SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THEIR SAFETY ISSUE.
KALANI, I MEAN, I WENT THERE.
WE TENDED TO HAVE SENIOR TEACHERS.
I DON'T MEAN SENIOR CITIZENS BUT THEY WERE OLDER.
VERSUS THE YOUNGER GO GETTER ONES JUST WANT TO GET IN THE CLASSROOM.
DID YOU HAVE TO DO A LOT OF MANAGEMENT IN THAT RESPECT?
>> YOU KNOW, WITH REGARDS TO TEACHERS, THEY ALL PRETTY MUCH WANTED TO COME BACK AND WORK WITH THE KIDS.
AND THEY MISS SEEING THE KIDS.
WE DO HAVE SOME THAT HAVE SOME CONDITIONS THAT WILL FACTOR IN.
BUT AGAIN, THE DEPARTMENT HAS WORK PROGRAM GUIDELINES FOR ALL EMPLOYEES.
I BELIEVE THAT TELEWORKING IS IMPORTANT TOOL TO HELP EMPLOYEES BALANCE WORK AND QUALITY OF LIFE CONCERNS.
FOR US, REQUEST FOR TELEWORK AT SCHOOLS HANDLED ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS.
DECISIONS MADE ON CONVERSATIONS THAT WE HAVE WITH EACH AFFECTED STAFF MEMBER.
WHAT HE DO, TRY TO FOCUS ON CONVERSATION AND FOCUS OF THE CONVERSATION IS NOT ON THE WHY.
BUT I THINK ON WHETHER THE INDIVIDUAL CAN FULFILL THE JOB REQUIREMENTS.
IF MAKE THOSE DECISION, PRINCIPALS LOOK FOR WHAT IS IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE STUDENTS AND EXAMINING WHETHER THERE ARE ANY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCE.
LEADS TO YOU OF THE REPRESENTING TEACHER TELEWORK ISSUES.
WE'VE BEEN SEEING CONVULSIVE EVERY DAY.
ALMOST EVERY DAY, SOME SORT OF CONVULSIONS.
AFTER TEN DAYS.
HOW DO YOU FEEL MOST OF YOUR TEACHERS ARE DOING WHETHER IT COMES TO THIS NEW NORMAL OF TEACHING ONLINE?
>> I THINK PUT IT RIGHT.
TEACHERS ARE STRESSED OTHER LAYER OF THREAT OCCURS, I APPRECIATE THAT MITCH IS ALLOWING HIS TEACHERS TO TELEWORK BUT WE HAVE SCHOOLS AND CONFERENCE AREAS WHERE THEY'RE IN THE ALLOWED TO TELEWORK.
TEACHERS ARE REALLY WORRIED ABOUT THEIR SAFETY.
THEN YOU HAVE SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS THAT SOME OF THEM ARE STILL IN CROWDED CLASSROOMS AND THEY JUST KEEP ON LOOKING AT WHEN THE MAYOR SAYS, IF YOU CAN WORK AT HOME, WORK AT HOME.
THEY'RE NOT GIVEN THIS OPPORTUNITY.
AND THEY'RE PUT INTO UNSAFE CONDITIONS AND THEY KEEP ON SAYING, THIS ISN'T FAIR, ISN'T SAFE.
ANOTHER LAYER OF STRESS OCCURRING.
>>Daryl: I'M GOING TO ASK, 13,000 OR SO TEACHERS THAT YOU REPRESENT.
VAST MAJORITY OF THEM EMBRACING THIS CHALLENGE AND COMING TO WORK AND ENJOYING WORK AND SUCCEEDING AT WORK?
>> PROFESSIONALISM OF TEACHERS IN THIS CONDITION HAS BEEN AMAZING.
I MEAN, YOU SHOULD THE CREATIVITY THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO PUT IN AND HAVING TO LET RALLY REINVENT THE WHEEL WHEN IT COMES TO TEACHING.
WORKING HARDER THAN EVER BEFORE.
FRUSTRATING BELIEVE BECAUSE WE'RE DISTANCE LEARNING, THEY'RE NOT WORK HARD.
THEY'RE WORKING HARDER THAN EVER BEFORE.

YOU'VE HAD PROBABLY ONE OF THE MORE CONVULSIVE CHAIR OF THE SCHOOL BOARD.
OVERSEEING HOURS OF LONG MEETINGS.
BIG PICTURE, HOW DUE FEEL LIKE IT'S GOING GIVEN ALL THE CURVE BALLS YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS?
>> THINK THE CHALLENGE OF THE SCHOOL BOARD IS THAT WE DON'T GET ENGAGED IN THE NITTY GRITTY HOW THINGS ARE ROLLED OUT.
SO MUCH OF THE CONCERNS COMING OUR WAY, PEOPLE EXPECT US TO BE RESPONSIVE AND WE'RE TRYING TO BE RESPONSIVE AND ALSO, RECOGNIZE THAT WE HAVE A COUPLE OF REALLY IMPORTANT PRIORITIES AS A BOARD AS WE MOVE FORWARD.
ONE, NUMBER ONE PRIORITY WAS THE SAFETY AND THE HEALTH OF AND AT ADULTS ON THE CAMPUS.
EVERYTHING ELSE FALLS UNDER THAT.
SECOND OF COURSE, AND ALMOST AS HIGH A PRIORITY, IS HOW ARE WE GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE EDUCATE THE MOST VULNERABLE CHILDREN.
I WAS DISTURBED BUT UNDERSTAND WHAT KIM WAS SAYING, THAT OUR FAMILIES THAT HAVE HAVING TO LEAVE THEIR CHILDREN ALONE NOW, IN ORDER FOR THEM TO ACCOMPLISH THEIR LEARNING ON THEIR OWN, I THINK THAT IS A HUGE CONCERN.
I THINK THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.
IN OUR SOCIETY.
THAT ARE REALLY BEYOND THE CAPABILITIES OF THE SCHOOLS TO HANDLE.
THE TRAUMA THAT FAMILIES ARE EXPERIENCING WILL COME TO SCHOOLS.
TRAUMA THAT TEACHERS ARE EXPERIENCING COME TO TEACHERS.
THEIR WORLD BEYOND THE CLASSROOM IS ALSO A CRITICAL WORRY FOR THEM.
MANY LAYERS OF ISSUES.

WE'RE AWARE OF THEM.
TEACHERS ARE DOING AMAZING THING RIGHT NOW.
WE HAVE TO HONOR THAT BUT ALSO HAVE TO RECOGNIZE CHALLENGE OF THE TIME THAT THAT ARE IN.

HIGH SCHOOL, GOING TO ONLINE VIRTUAL GOING MEET CLASSES EVERY DAY AND DIFFERENT KIND OF SCHEDULE WHEN WE'RE IN PERSON.
I'M NOT IN PERSON BUT SEEING MY TEACHERS SAME AMOUNT OF TIME I WOULD BE SEEING THEM IN SCHOOL.
I DON'T THINK I'M GETTING ANY MORE WORK THAN I WOULD BE IN SCHOOL.

THINK THE CHALLENGE WITH THIRD GRADERS THEY'RE JUST KIND OF STARTING TO GET USED TO USING TECHNOLOGY AND THE COMPUTERS.

CERTAINLY, WITH RESPECT TO HOW WE HANDLE A VIRUS, NOTIFICATION AND THOSE KINDS OF THINGS HAVE BEEN STANDARDIZED.

YOU MENTIONED EARLIER ABOUT DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES OF DIFFERENT CHILDREN.
AND EVEN TEACHING STYLES.
MAYBE WE WILL BE ABLE TO MATCH THESE A LITTLE BETTER.
SO THAT IF THERE ARE CHILDREN, WE HAVE CHARTER SCHOOLS DOING THIS ALREADY.
CHILDREN LEARN WELL ONLINE.
TEACHERS THAT TEACH WELL ONLINE.
WE CAN MATCH THEM UP AND USE THOSE SKILLS AND NEW TECHNOLOGY.
I THINK WE'LL COME OUT BETTER IN THE END.
BUT IT'S GOING TO BE A LONG ROAD.
THIS ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN RIGHT AWAY.
WE HAVE A LOT STRUGGLE AHEAD.
