Robert Cazimero So, a friend of ours was living out at Hakipuʻu, I happened to be visiting and our friend Arna came by to say hello.

And she, she said she had brought with her a song that was written by Mary Kawena Pukui.

Now for those of us who study Hawaiian music and the language and you know customs and just all the things about our culture, the name Mary Kawena Pukui conjures a time long forgotten, an interesting and very erudite woman who spoke English and Hawaiian beautifully.

In comes Arna saying to me that she has this song written by Kawena, but it was written for her aunt.

And she says that there's no melody.

And she said to me, do you think that maybe you could write a melody for it?

And I was like, hell, I'm not gonna pass this one up.

I mean, to write the melody for words that were written by Mary Kawena Pukui.

I wrestled with this for, for quite a few months trying to figure out a melody because I wanted to do it in a hula tempo, but it just wasn't working.

I thought to myself you know, the music of that time there were a lot of waltzes.

So, I thought I'm gonna just try this in a waltz tempo so instead of it going like 1, 2, 3, 4 - 1, 2, 3, 4, I thought I'm going to take you to 1, 2 ,3 - 1, 2, 3 - 1, 2, 3 and as I was doing the song and as I was singing parts of the melody and I think this voice of somebody sitting next to me, to me I felt would say to me, no, you can do better.

No, this has to go up higher.

No, you need to come down and when it was done, I had this and so I turned to my side and I said thank you Kawena.

And I thought to myself, boy, somebody should do this.

Okay, I'm going to be very honest.

What I said was, somebody should translate this into Hawaiian and I should sing it.

Then Kuana did it.

He translated it and recorded it and I was so angry.

And yet, it's so beautiful.

Kuana Torres Kahele I was getting ready to do my first holiday album.

It was interesting because all I ever knew how to do is Hawaiian music.

And when I started to do the Christmas album, I wanted to kind of stay away from doing all the songs that we grew up listening to, our parents or grandparents sang to us because it's kind of redundant.

A lot of people record the same songs over and over.

And so, I sat down and I wrote a few.

And then there were a couple of other songs that I really liked, that I translated into Hawaiian and recorded and so the song he's talking about is a song that was originally composed by Leonard Cohen it's a song titled Hallelujah.

And so, we'd like to present it to you in the, the B&K style.
